If you don't agree with our choices, let us know where you go for bagels in the comments section. We are always on the hunt for great places to eat and love finding new spots.

But first, did you know that the bagel is nearly 500 years old and was first documented in travels from the Jewish families of Poland in the 1600s. They arrived in America with the huge Polish-Jewish immigration in the 1800s to New York where they became a huge success.

Nationwide, the bagel really didn't grab the attention of average folks until the mid-20th-century when mass manufacturing made it easier to transport those yummy round heaven of dough.

Here are our picks:

  • Bagel Shop & Deli, 351 E Main St., Middletown: The motto at this bagel shop is "we aim to make you happy." And, they do with soft, not chewy bagels and for something different, how about a meatball with that bagel, yep a meatball. Give em a try, they won't disappoint.
  • Orange County Bagel Bakery, 151 Greenwich Ave., Goshen: If you're ready for a bagel in a really clean place, then this is your spot. Yelpers say the bagels are great, and the sandwiches awesome with generous portions. Friendly staff who move the line quickly. What could be better?
  • Central Deli & Bagels, 133 N Main St., Florida: Known for their stacked breakfast sandwiches on bagels that are sure to fill you up, as well as their lunch specials. Friendly service.
  • Orange County Bagel Bakery, 67 Dolson Ave., Middletown: Fresh hand-rolled bagels with lots of flavors. Good service, good coffee, and yeah, what else do you want? Also, just opened a branch in Newburgh.
  • Bagel Girls Cafe, 69 Brookside Ave., Chester: Yelp loves this place that is known for soft and chewy bagels, just how they should be. Also great iced coffee and plenty of varieties to choose from.
